Better Call Saul Season 6 Episode 6 review: Kim and Jimmy prep for D-Day; Lalo inches closer to Gus’ secret

Story: There’s still no sign of Lalo Salamanca (Tom Dalton) in Albuquerque, but that’s because he’s still in Germany, trying to get to the root of what Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) and Mike (Jonathan Banks) were up to last season, when they flew in engineers and workmen for a secret underground project. Mike’s still got surveillance teams at all spots he thinks Lalo could potentially strike and he is not letting up.

Meanwhile, Jimmy/Saul (Bob Odenkirk) and Kim (Rhea Seehorn) are still working on their mission to take down Howard (Patrick Fabian), but unbeknown to them he is also tracking their movements to turn the tide on them. Kim is so intent on this mission that she’s even willing to forego a potentially life-changing career opportunity when an unforeseen hiccup presents itself on the D-day of their project.

Review: So, now we know why Kim Wexler only sports that one pair of earrings. But more importantly, this was an episode that provided a lot more clarity as to why Kim isn’t always the Miss Goody Two Shoes that we’d expect her to be, why she’s enjoying this take down of Howard, and so much more. It’s all beginning to make sense now. This may not bode very well for her, especially since Howard is aware of their machinations and plotting his own game against Kim and Jimmy.

Next week is the mid-season finale of this last season of Better Call Saul, so today’s episode was about building up to a lot of potentially explosive stuff that’s yet to come. Lalo, for instance, is a lot closer to finding out what Gus has been building under the laundromat. And when he does, all hell will break loose. Lalo has always been suspicious of Gus, but he just couldn’t figure out why. But then, since Gus is the one who is going to come out as the last man standing in this conflict, one wonders to what end Lalo’s current snooping around will serve.

Season 6 of Better Call Saul has 13 episodes and we are already mid-way. Jimmy’s still working the Sandpiper angle, and on the take down of Howard, all while building up his practice for those with questionable reputations. So, there’s all of that, plus Mike possibly thwarting Lalo’s plans whatsoever, and the Better Call Saul connect with Breaking Bad that’s yet to be established. Considering all this, it was surprising that an episode directed by Giancarlo Esposito was frittered away with no major developments. The writers could have given him some more meaty substance to bite into.

Verdict: Six episodes into the final season and we still know so little about Kim and Jimmy’s elaborate con of Howard, so it makes no sense that she would ditch a prospective job opportunity to return to Albuquerque and be with Jimmy on D-Day (whatever that means), because of a hiccup in their elaborate plan. Hopefully, next week’s episode will answer that question and a lot more and step it up with a wee bit more action.
