Nayanam Review: Varun Sandesh's rustic act anchors a slow-burn thriller that delivers

Nayanam Story

Dr. Nayan(Varun Sandesh) is an ophthalmologist who is interested in peeping into others' lives. He injects a fluid into his patients' eyes that has special powers. The fluid works in such a way that Nayan can wear special glasses and watch what is happening in his patients' lives for four minutes. He does the same with one of his patients, Madhavi (Priyanka Jain), and gets the shock of his life when he sees her murdering her husband. He approaches the cops, but they do not take him seriously. What did Nayan do? How did he solve the murder mystery on his own? This is the basic story of the series, which can be streamed here on OTTplay Premium. 

Nayanam Review

Nayanam is written and directed by Swathi Prakash, and she chooses a subject that is quite interesting in today’s times. People, especially in India, are hugely interested in others’ lives, and the series explores what happens when a crazy doctor plans things in such a way that he can peep into his patients’ lives through special glasses.

This aspect is set up through an odd couple. The wife, played by Priyanka Jain, is beautiful but does not share a healthy relationship with her husband. Things take a wild turn when the husband is killed, and Nayan is directly involved in the murder case. Ali Reza of Bigg Boss fame arrives on the scene and starts his investigation, and the scenes related to the crime are showcased in a gripping manner.

Nayanam is a web series that has a gripping story but starts on a very bland note. The backstory of Dr. Nayan, why he is a creep, is showcased vaguely, and this does not create much interest. 

However, once the character of Priyanka Jain enters the scene, things become thrilling. The murder mystery, investigation, and the presence of a third person are showcased in a gripping manner.

After a shaky start, the series starts making sense from the third episode and is presented engagingly. The mood created by the director is perfect for OTT viewing, and the presence of actors like Priyanka Jain makes things even more interesting.

The best part of the series is the final three episodes, which unfold on a gripping note. Be it the BGM, performances, or the twists revealed, everything flows organically and ends the series on a thumping note. One of the takeaways of the series is how a person who is always interested in others’ lives lands in trouble due to his creepy behaviour, and the issues he faces are showcased effectively.

Coming to the performances, Varun Sandesh is top-notch and delivers a superb performance. Known for subtle roles, he springs a surprise in Nayanam. The sadistic nature, creepy behaviour, and tense emotions he portrays are impressive. 

Priyanka Jain looks gorgeous and has a striking screen presence. She has a challenging role and performs with aplomb. The beauty and intelligence her character brings make things special.

Ali Reza plays a typical cop and does well. Swathi Prakash has extracted solid performances from the cast, with each actor delivering their best. Another highlight is Uttej’s performance. The seasoned actor delivers a superb act, making one wonder why he does not get more such roles these days.

Ajay Arasada has composed the background score, which is arresting and elevates the tension without going overboard. The visuals are also gripping, with the lighting enhancing the tense atmosphere. Swathi Prakash makes an impressive debut with Nayanam. Though not many know about this series, once you start watching it, the gripping crime thriller will surely entertain you.

Overall, Nayanam is a well-made crime drama with a strong setup, impressive performances, and solid thrills. Though it starts on a dull note and lacks clarity initially, once it finds its rhythm, the series holds your attention till the end. Stream the show on Zee5 and here on OTTplay Premum.
