Ajit Agarkar seeks tenure extension to ODI World Cup 2027 after unprecedented run in white-ball cricket
Since taking over in July 2023, Agarkar has led India to significant victories, including three ICC trophies: the T20 World Cup 2024, Champions Trophy 2025, and T20 World Cup 2026.

In a move that signals a desire for long-term stability, the Indian Men's Cricket team's chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, has reportedly asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to expand his contract through the ICC ODI World Cup 2027. The request comes on the heels of one of the most prosperous periods in the record of Indian white-ball cricket, punctuated by the national team’s victorious defence of their T20 World Cup title earlier this month.

Agarkar, who took over the reins in July 2023, has led a golden era for the "Men in Blue." Under his supervision, India has won three major ICC trophies in less than two years: the T20 World Cup 2024, Champions Trophy 2025, and, most recently, the T20 World Cup 2026 title on March 8 in Ahmedabad.
The "Agarkar Era" by the numbers
Agarkar's case for an elongation is supported by a win-loss record that is nearly perfect.
In 33 white-ball matches under his term, India has suffered just two defeats.
This dominance is highlighted by a hat-trick of ICC trophies in a span of 24 months, where India won the T20 World Cup 2024, Champions Trophy 2025, and, most recently, the T20 World Cup 2026 title.
Along with that, India also went on to defend the Asia Cup in 2025.
The decision to back players like Sanju Samson, who repaid the faith by being named the Player of the Tournament in the recent T20 World Cup triumph, will also work for the former Indian fast bowler.
Agarkar’s current contract is set to expire in June 2026. By pursuing a stretch, he seeks to lead the selection committee through the next major 50-over cycle, winning the ICC ODI World Cup 2027 to be hosted across South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
However India's failure in the Test format might go against Ajit Agarkar's will to extend his contract but Indian men's cricket team's performance in the white ball format will surely give him a positive thumb ahead of a big season.
