After posting just 163 runs on the board and losing 5 wickets in their 20 overs, many believed that Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) had posted a low total. However, now, after the game against Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 came to an end in 18.5 overs, the total posted also felt huge as the visitors lost by 33 runs.

It was a convincing win for the hosts as LSG found ways to defend their below-par total, with pacer Yash Thakur even claiming a fifer - the first in the 17th edition of the IPL at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium. For GT, Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill got decent starts, but LSG bowlers came in and took wickets at regular intervals, not allowing any batter to settle for long.

In Wriddhiman Saha's absence, Sai Sudharsan (31) opened the innings with Gill (19) as the duo forged the first 50-plus opening stand for the Titans this season. But it was Yash Thakur who provided the breakthrough for LSG as he castled the GT captain with a pacy full ball off the final ball of the powerplay.

This opened the floodgates that saw all the GT batters fall like a pack of cards. LSG spinners delivered tonight as Bishnoi took a screamer off his bowling to remove Kane Williamson while Krunal Pandya finished his spell with a three-fer.

Other than Sai Sudharsan, only Rahul Tewatia got some runs as he scored 30 off 25 balls. Sharath BR (2), Vijay Shankar (17), Darshan Nalkande (12), Rashid Khan (0), Umesh Yadav (2), and Noor Ahmad (4) did not contribute much. For LSG, Yash's fifer was complemented by Krunal's three-wicket haul and Naveen-ul-Haq and Ravi Bishnoi's one wicket each.

Earlier, GT was happy that they kept LSG to 163 at the end of 20 overs. Quinton de Kock (6) went early as did Devdutt Padikkal (7) but KL Rahul (33 off 31) and Marcus Stoinis (58 off 43) added a stand of 73 runs - but they consumed a lot of balls.

Just when the LSG skipper looked to up the strike rate, he fell. Stoinis looked dangerous but after a couple of sixes against Nalkande, he got out in the same over. Nicholas Pooran did manage a 22-ball 32 but he struggled as he swung and did not connect as he would have liked to.
