Bramayugam, the period horror thriller which marked the first collaboration of Mammootty and director Rahul Sadasivan is one of the most loved Malayalam films of recent times. The film, which had its theatrical release in February 2024, is currently streaming on the popular OTT platforms, SonyLIV and OTT Play Premium. Bramayugam is now receiving immense love from audiences, especially for its unconventional ending.

Bramayugam has the most ‘unconvetionally satisfying’ ending

Director Rahul Sadasivan is unarguably one of the bravest filmmakers in the contemporary Malayalam cinema. The filmmaker made an experimental horror film set in the 17th century in black-and-white format. Mammootty, who has always been open to new experiments and challenges, trusted the director’s vision. Even in the storytelling, Rahul Sadasivan and co-writer TD Ramakrishnan broke all the conventional norms of Malayalam cinema’s horror films. Just like director Rahul confirmed before the release, the Mammootty starrer has minimal horror elements. However, despite not providing the usual jump scares and horror tropes, the filmmaker and his team created a marvelous cinematic experience that deserves to be revisited again and again. However, in Bramayugam, the film ended on a highly thought-provoking note, where the hunger for power, greed, and selfishness, never end. Just like the Chaathan and his stone ring, greed constantly shapeshifts and takes new forms. We are introduced to the most haunting phase ‘Bramayuagam’ where protagonist Thevan, who just wished to have his freedom back, dies. He shifts his loyalties in a fraction of a second, and his ultimate goals become much more than revenge. However, this game of power was ended by an even bigger force that lusts power – the Portuguese army that invaded our country. Meanwhile, Chaathan, who is set free, finally takes the most convenient form in the appearance of Thevan, as he steps into a new beginning.
