Sivakarthikeyan: Madharaasi will speak about thuppakki; it will not have slow-motion action

Sivakarthikeyan says Madharaasi with AR Murugadoss is his most intense action role yet. Unlike his usual fun films, it’s rage-fuelled, raw, and marks a shift in his script choices after Amaran.

It was a year back on September 5, audience saw Vijay handing over the ‘thuppakki’ to Sivakarthikeyan in The GOAT. And let’s just say it is more than just a coincidence that Sivakarthikeyan’s film Madharaasi with Thuppakki director AR Murugadoss is coming out on September 5 this year.

Madharaasi actor Sivakarthikeyan Interview

Best AR Murugadoss films to watch

In conversation about Madharaasi, Sivakarthikeyan recalls to us about shooting for his GOAT cameo, “I had already gotten committed to Madharaasi and we were halfway through the shoot of the film, when I did the GOAT scene. When I told Murugadoss sir, he was pleasantly surprised and clapped. It was all a pure coincidence and divine intervention.”

And shooting with the Thuppakki director himself, Sivakarthikeyan said it was an easy process. “We shot in a relaxed manner, and Murugadoss sir is not someone who keeps us tensed.” The actor further talks about the film itself. “Madharaasi will speak about thuppakki. Gun is an element in the film. A north Indian villain facing a hero from the south, can be the one line of the film. There is something within the characterisation which you can see during the film. So that has helped me a lot to portray my character. There is no message in this film that I tell, and the film just shows what is there and happening.”

Sivakarthikeyan, who is known for his fun personality and comic timing, warns that Madharaasi is not of that kind. “Beginning portions might have some fun, but Madharaasi is not a film in which you can expect more of it. It is AR Murugadoss sir’s type of film and I have tried to fit into it. I don’t think it is a film in which we can balance both of our elements. I adapted to his intensity and heaviness. From the looks of trailer, I can say that I have not done so much of mass commercial action. There is love and action in the film, but the latter is loaded.”

Rightfully so, Sivakarthikeyan has also been showing great strides in choosing different scripts outside his comfort. “If you take Doctor, it is a dark-humour subject with commercial elements. It has not been done in that format until then. In case of Amaran, it was a biopic and based on real-life which demands me to be in a certain way. In case of Madharaasi, Murugadoss sir said that my character will be heavily bearded and someone who cannot be controlled when things get messier. There was a look created and I did put some weight on and had to dance, and stunts along with it.”

On Amaran win, action films and commercial success

It was nearly a year back Sivakarthikeyan gave a solid blockbuster in form of Amaran, a biopic on an army man. It wasn’t the easiest of choice for the actor but he took it up as a challenge. “When I was doing Amaran, some doubted if a biopic could become commercial success and that I may not be suitable for an army story. All I had in mind was to make the film commercial success and pull it off best. We cannot determine the money it collects and how it will be received, but what we can do is deliver the best of it, give a solid performance, and make sure the producer gets table profit. I should be able to hold the story for two hours and that is all I can do.”

Sivakarthikeyan has also earned a place where it requires him to factor in many decisions before signing up a film. “We know what kind of stories we have done before, and I am also looking for what new can be done and push myself. Also, there is also an element of business involved. I may want to do only a comedy film, but that alone is not enough. There are audience expectations, business and what I like. A story should fit into all these three sections.”

Which is why Sivakarthikeyan channels his passion projects to his banner and produces them. He explains, “The films that I do are very different from Kottukkaali that I produced. Not many films like that have come out. It is an opportunity where I can just do my passion projects, and take risks.”

Sivakarthikeyan, who is currently backing a rural-based, emotional comedy, with just character artistes, says that he produces films not for monetary benefit. “To be a profit for also includes introducing new talents and telling different stories. Since I am doing content on small-scale, and my main source is acting, I am able to manage. But as a producer alone, there are different sort of issues and it is not for me to complain.”

Concluding the conversation, Sivakarthikeyan talks about Madharaasi, which will be a different kind of action from his other films like Amaran and Maaveeran. “Maaveeran and Amaran were different kind of actions. One is more of gun fights, while the other listens to a voice and fights. In Madharaasi, the action is fuelled by rage and more intense. Madharaasi does not have slow-motion actions,” he signs off.
