The Game actor Santhosh Prathap: The games we choose to play reflect our emotions

Actor Santhosh Prathap plays one of the important characters in The Game web series, a Netflix original which streams from October 2 onwards

Actor Santhosh Prathap, who is often seen in supporting characters in Tamil cinema, plays a prominent lead in Netflix Tamil web series The Game. The series releases on October 2, and is a thriller which revolves around a game developer couple. With Shraddha Srinath essaying Kavya, the protagonist, Santhosh plays Anoop, her husband, who gets favoured at their workplace, all thanks to his gender, even as he continues to be supportive of his wife and does his best to maintain equality.

Speaking of his character and the series, Santhosh says, “The Game is not much about gaming. Our domain of work might be that, but it is more of a real-life game. Like what happens in society, among people, and in the office. So, it is more about the real-life game.”

On the role he plays, he says, “My character Anoop is someone a lot of women would wish for in a man. In that way, this character is designed beautifully. Because of the issues we face, women don’t, and vice versa. So, my character supports Kavya (the protagonist played by Shraddha Srinath), bringing her back to ground. I understand how it works in the same office, the politics and issues from society. Beyond this, there is also a personal issue that goes on between us. So, to balance all this, my character is designed. It is about how a man can be a change in a woman’s life, be it professional or personal.”

‘It was more like venting out frustration’

Santhosh says that as a person, he has not been a hardcore gamer besides playing a few of them.
“As a gamer, I have not been much into PlayStation or Xbox. But I have played some computer and mobile games. But the games we choose reflect the emotions we are in. There have been times when I played GTA, in which I explored the world, did some petty crimes, and broke stuff. It was more like venting out frustration,” the actor explains.

Circling back to The Game, Santhosh talks about the intricacies of playing Anoop, a character that sits somewhere between being a supportive husband who offers to help his wife with her problems, but also being progressive in letting her deal with her problems in her own way with full independence. “I have totally different chemistry with all the characters as compared to Kavya, so I will be balancing something that she will be missing out on. I think it is all about writing and direction, it is about bringing it out. I think people are going to love my character, and it is more real. It is more of a family drama, if you take out the gaming element,” Santhosh Pratap concludes.

The Game streams on Netflix from October 2. Directed by Rajesh M Selva, the series is a thriller.
