Angammal – SunNXT via OTTplay Premium

Angammal, headlined by Geetha Kailasam and directed by Vipin Radhakrishnan, is a story of an elderly rural woman, which itself is a rarity in mainstream Tamil cinema. The film revolves around the titular character, whose life reflects the struggles and resilience of older women who often remain invisible in society. Instead of portraying her as fragile or dependent, Angammal explores her strength, self-respect and determination to live life on her own terms. When her son and the entire family coax her to wear a saree blouse, only so to look ‘decent’ in front of her son fiancée’s family, Angammal refuses to budge from her comfort and identity. The film challenges stereotypes surrounding elderly women. Ultimately, Angammal becomes a powerful statement on resilience, reminding that courage, individuality and the pursuit of freedom is not something to be let gone at older age.

Gargi is the fight within oneself a young woman has, as she faces the internal conflict of choosing between her loved one and the truth. At the centre of narrative is Sai Pallavi’s titular character who is fighting a court case to defend her father accused of child sexual abuse. As the case unfolds, Gargi is forced to confront harsh social judgement, legal complexities and her own emotional turmoil. It is through her own personal past related to abuse, stigma that survivors face, and integrity, Gargi takes the path of truth to pursue. Director Gautham Ramachandran makes protagonist Gargi a powerful portrayal of woman who stands firm in her principles, emphasising that courage and moral clarity should have upper hand even in the most difficult circumstances.

Bad Girl – JioHotstar via OTTplay Premium

Bad Girl directed by debutant Varsha Bharath and starring Anjali Sivaraman, places a bold female character at the centre of its narrative to explore identity, rebellion and the complexities of modern womanhood. This story is about Ramya, your typical girl from a middle-class, orthodox family who is curious to know beyond, interested in boys, and refuses to be confined within the expectations imposed on her by society, family and relationships. A coming-of-age tale, Bad Girl questions the relevance of the title, and what it is to refuse to fit into the traditional mould of how a woman is expected to behave, but openly embraces her choices, desires and individuality. Through the protagonist’s journey, the film examines themes of autonomy, judgement and personal freedom.

Aramm – SunNXT via OTTplay Premium

Starring Nayanthara in the lead role, and directed by Gopi Nainar, the actor plays District Collector Madhivadhani. Inspired by true events, Aramm traces the lengths and breadths the protagonist goes in executing a mission that involves a rescue operation. Exploring the themes of gender politics, bureaucracy, and economical disparity, Aramm is about a district collector who uses all her forces to retrieve a child who has fallen into a borewell. With Indian society drowned in systemic failures and social injustice, Aramm has Nayanthara play someone who embodies authority, compassion and moral clarity. Unlike typical portrayals of women in commercial cinema, the protagonist is neither romanticised nor sidelined. Instead, she is shown as a capable leader who balances empathy with responsibility.
