Aamir Khan steps away from producer role? Actor reveals his upcoming plans

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan said that he is prioritising acting over producing, handing Aamir Khan Productions to Aparna Purohit. He revealed that several projects are gearing up for 2026 releases.

Aamir Hussain Khan is a celebrated Indian actor, filmmaker, and producer known for his work in Hindi cinema. Known as “Mr Perfectionist, he has become one of the most iconic figures in Indian film over a career spanning more than three decades. His production house, Aamir Khan Productions, has released several popular films such as Laapataa Ladies, Delhi Belly, Lagaan, and more. However, in a new interview, Aamir has shared that he is focusing on himself as an actor. So what will happen to him as a producer? Let's find out.

What will happen to Aamir Khan Productions?

Speaking to Variety India, Aamir Khan shared that internally, he has taken a big decision, and that is his company Aamir Khan Productions is now being headed by Aparna Purohit. "All the projects that we had greenlit before she came on board, are all releasing in 2026. There is ‘Happy Patel’, which just released and ‘Ek Din’ and ‘Lahore 1947’ will also release," he said.

Praising Aparna, Aamir said that she is highly capable of handling the entire production house on her own. He mentioned that while he would be available if required, he prefers her to manage AKP independently. At the same time, he is eager to explore new stories and decide on his next project.

He explained that whenever he takes on the role of executive producer, he fully immerses himself in every stage, from approving the project and forming the team to preparing the film, while ensuring his full involvement throughout.

"So, in films like ‘Happy Patel’ or ‘Ek Din’, I'm not acting in them. I mean, in ‘Happy Patel’, I've got a small cameo. But if it's my film, like ‘Laapata Ladies’, even if I'm not acting on it, that doesn't mean there is any less of me in it," he said.

He admitted that acting as well as producing limited his opportunities as an actor. After years of directing both, he is now prioritising his acting.

Aamir was last seen in Sitaare Zameen Par (2025), which earned praise from fans and critics. He also appeared in Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos, a satirical spy comedy directed by Vir Das and Kavi Shastri, which received mixed reviews.

Aamir is focusing on his dream project, the Mahabharat adaptation and a project with director Lokesh Kanagaraj. Apart from these, another upcoming film under his production is Lahore 1947, directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and starring Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta and also Ek Din, starring his son Junaid Khan and Sai Pallavi which is all set to hit theatres on May 1, 2026.
