SonyLiv has officially announced that the Telugu action thriller Agent will be available for streaming on its platform on May 19. The confirmation came after a query on Twitter regarding the film's release date. The movie, starring Akhil Akkineni, Mammootty, and Dino Morea, hit theaters on April 28, along with director Mani Ratnam's highly anticipated film Ponniyin Selvan 2. However, Agent failed to meet expectations and received a tepid response from audiences and critics alike.

Trade sources predict that the theatrical run of director Surender Reddy's spy-thriller will not even earn Rs 5 crore due to its poor reception. The release of Virupaksha, a horror thriller directed by debutant Karthik Varma Dandu and written by Sukumar of Pushpa fame, also benefited from Agent's failure, as it garnered positive reviews and capitalized on the lack of interest in Agent.

Producer Anil Sunkara has taken full responsibility for the film's commercial failure and has publicly acknowledged the mistakes made during its production, including an overshot budget and a lack of a solid script. "We have to take the entire blame for #Agent. Though we know it's an uphill task, we thought of conquering but failed to do so as we did a blunder starting the project without a bound script & innumerable issues including Covid followed," he said in a tweet.

Sunkara has apologized to those who had faith in the film and has promised to learn from the costly mistake and not repeat it in future projects. "Our sincere apologies to all those who put trust on us. We will make it up for the losses with dedicated planning & hardwork in our future projects," he added.
