Post the debacle of Prabhas' The Raja Saab, director Maruthi has moved on and is ready with his next

Maruthi made headlines when he bagged the golden opportunity to direct Prabhas for the big-budget entertainer The Raja Saab. Made on a massive budget of ₹450 crore, the film ended up as a disaster at the box office. It is now streaming on OTTplay Premium.

Ever since the film landed on OTT, trolls have only increased, and the person facing the brunt is none other than director Maruthi himself. Despite the criticism, The Raja Saab continues to clock record views on digital platforms.
Now, Maruthi has apparently locked his next film. We at OTTplay have learned that his upcoming project is titled Happy Pongal and is said to be a full-on commercial comedy drama.
Initially, Maruthi approached noted actor Varun Tej for the lead role, but he reportedly rejected the offer. The director is now exploring other casting options. The script has been finalized, and pre-production work is in full swing.
Sources say Maruthi is in no mood to slow down and is planning to begin shooting in the next few months. His aim is to wrap up the film by the end of the year and release it as a Sankranti 2026 special.
More than Prabhas and other aspects, it was Maruthi’s narration and treatment of the horror-comedy that invited massive trolling. The situation reportedly became tense, with a few fans even staging protests near his residence in Hyderabad.
Though the OTT rights were sold for a hefty price, the makers reportedly incurred losses close to ₹100 crore. Distributors who invested heavily in the project also suffered significant setbacks.
Nidhhi Agerwal, Malavika Mohanan, and Riddhi Kumar played the female leads in The Raja Saab. With Varun Tej rejecting his latest offer, it remains to be seen which actor Maruthi will finalize next.
Maruthi is known for delivering several hits in Telugu cinema, including Bhale Bhale Magadivoy, which gave Nani a major boost. Now, as he faces criticism, all eyes are on how he stages his comeback.
