If one were to follow the fan groups of particular superstars in the Kannada film industry, what stands out is that they not only foster vehement dislike for other actors, but also for their films, to the extent that they will not watch (at least in theatres) movies that do not star their idol. Prime example in Sandalwood would be the feud between fans of Challenging Star Darshan and those of Kiccha Sudeep. There are other examples too in the Kannada film industry, but what sets this apart from the fan culture in most other industries is that in celebrating only the work of their idols and nothing else, they are, in turn, harming the prospects of Kannada cinema.

What is Vinnod Prabhakar's take on star wars?

At least that is what Kannada actor Vinnod Prabhakar strongly believes. The actor, who was last seen in Maadeva, is preparing for the release of his next, Balaramana Dinagalu, which is said to be based on the life of a real-life gangster and is directed by Aa Dinagalu fame KM Chaitanya. Speaking about the fan wars in Kannada cinema, Vinnod said that the problem is that instead of everyone watching any actor’s new film, only 50% would probably do so, as fans of the particular actor, while the other 50% abstains, and vice versa.

“What they don’t understand is that star-wars are hurting the Kannada film industry. Let’s say two star-led films release and both may be good, but each gets only 50% of the industry. Instead, we need to develop a culture where 100% of the audience goes to both films. There are discussions within the film industry involving stakeholders and we are hopeful of finding a solution to this shortly,” Vinnod told TV9 Kannada.
