Dude has been receiving resounding success at the box office, making Rs 100 crore within a week of release. Clearly the Diwali winner, the Pradeep Ranganathan and Mamitha Baiju-starrer, has been winning audience all over, especially the youth. Directed by debutant Keerthiswaran, the film, however, is also receiving its fair brickbat, especially after the director defended the placement of a sexist dialogue in the film.

In one of the scenes from Dude, Pradeep Ranganathan’s character Agan, utters a sexist dialogue to Mamitha Baiju’s Kural when the latter kneels down to propose to him. The dialogue mocks the Kural’s position and compares it to an adult film. This dialogue is being considered sexist and insulting, given many netizens raised the question and wondered if any male friends would talk like this to their female pals.

In conversation with Sudhir Srinivasan's YouTube channel, Keerthiswaran said about placing the dialogue, "I am not normalising it but how I see it among our friends, or even on the Internet, I find it normal. Honestly, if we think what we speak among friends, we will realise. Instead of seeing her as opposite gender, I treated her as someone I would speak with my guy friend. She won't get hurt.”

However, this justification did not go well with netizens, who were quick to give a reality check to the director’s statement. Many called out the justification as 'lame explanation', and that many women in real life would not accept such a statement from their male friends. “That one scene itself stopped me from watching that movie..and stop pretending like you don't wanna normalise man..You already did it,” another said.
