Elumale on OTT: Debutant director Punit Rangaswamy’s cross-border love story had received fairly positive reviews, but did not ignite the box office

Tharun Sudhir is a trusted name in Kannada movie circles, both as a writer-director as well as creative director. He’s made films like Chowka, Roberrt and Kaatera, while also serving as creative director on most of actor Sharan’s home productions, which have all done well at the box office. So when Tharun then decided to turn producer and back a debutant director, Punit Rangaswamy, there was no doubt that there’d be something worthwhile in the script.

The film was Elumale , which became Ek Love Ya actor Raanna’s sophomore project and launched Mahanati fame Priyanka Achar. Elumale as marketed as an intense love story set a couple of decades ago, that was based on real incidents. The film’s story spans one night, when a girl from Salem leaves home to unite with the love of her life in Mysuru. That night, as it turns out, happens to be the night of Operation Cocoon, in which forest brigand Veerappan was killed, and on the route that the couple take to meet each other. Will they get caught in the melee or do they get waylaid?
The love story and the lovers’ desperate attempts to finally be together apart, also included a sinister plot by cops that would derail their plans for a happily-ever-after, all of which Punit managed to stitch together into one cohesive narrative. The reviews from critics and audiences alike were largely positive, yet despite this, the film underperformed at the box office.
