While Mohanlal has gone behind the microphone to lend his voice for several tracks, his most popular one is arguably Kaithapoovin from TK Rajeev Kumar’s Kannezhuthi Pottum Thottu. After two decades, the superstar has now rendered the title track of the filmmaker’s upcoming release Bermuda.

In an exclusive chat with OTTplay, Rajeev Kumar says that he didn’t rope in Mohanlal as part of a promotional angle for the movie, which has Shane Nigam and Vinay Forrt in the lead, but because the song situation in the film needed an actor to render it.

“It's a song that depicts a moment between two central characters of Bermuda, essayed by Shane and Vinay. The track had to be expressive and demanded an actor’s contribution. That’s why I reached out to Lal sir and he immediately agreed. It’s also a track that he was excited to sing,” says the filmmaker, who had also worked as part of the directorial team of Mohanlal’s directorial debut Barroz that concluded shooting last month.

Further on roping in the superstar for the song, he explains, “The reason we didn’t think about a proper playback singer for the song is because it needed the singer to also understand the nuances of the characters and the actors playing them. Lal sir could embody the performances and I believe the song has come out really well.”

The director also explains that the film’s album, which was launched by Mohanlal last week in an event in Kochi, will also stand apart from his previous movies. “It will feature a different set of compositions than what people have come to expect from music director Ramesh Narayan. There are four tracks that are crooned by artistes such as Haricharan and Benny Dayal too,” he says.

The feel-good mystery film, which wrapped up its shoot last year in Thiruvananthapuram, is set to hit theatres on August 19.
