Samarjit Lankesh, the son of Kannada filmmaker Indrajit Lankesh, had been prepping for a big screen outing for a while and when the time came for his launch, his parents stepped up and decided to back his debut film. Indrajit’s wife Arpita filled in as producer under their banner Laughing Buddha Films, while the former took on the responsibility of writing and directing the movie. Called Gowri, the film, which paired Samarjit with Puttagowri Maduve fame Saanya Iyer, also a debutante, released in theatres in August last year, but its reception was underwhelming.

The film did not have a pre-release digital streaming deal and it is only now that it has made its way on to an OTT platform. As of April 5, 2025, Gowri is available on Amazon Prime Video, but there’s a catch. The film has dropped on the platform’s store and can be availed on rental basis only (transactional video on demand). The film is available to be rented at Rs 99 only with Kannada audio and English subtitles.

DIRECTOR Indrajit Lankesh
STREAMING PLATFORM Amazon Prime Video (rental only)
STREAMING DATE April 5, 2025

The film, meanwhile, had Samarjit in a double role, which served as a perfect talent show for the youngster. While he was a stylish modern-day youth in one avatar, the other had a more rustic touch. What was also commendable was that Indrajit had one of his protagonists with a hearing impediment. Unfortunately, instead of capitalising on this and building an emotionally-wrenching tale, the disability often becomes an after-thought, as scene-after-scene is designed to allow Samarjit to flex his skills sets.

The young actor is said to be a part of director Nandakishore’s next, Vrushabha, the Telugu-Kannada bilingual with Mohanlal in the lead. Reports suggest that Samarjit has replaced Roshan Meka, who was to play the Malayalam superstar’s son in the film. The team is yet to officially announce this casting.
