Director Prasanth Varma, who forayed into Telugu cinema with Awe, has consistently redefined himself with every outing, be it Zombie Reddy or Kalki. His upcoming directorial is a mythological fantasy in the garb of a superhero tale, HanuMan, bringing together his good friends Teja Sajja, Amritha Aiyer, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Vinay Rai and Getup Srinu in important roles.
HanuMan, produced by Niranjan Reddy under Primeshow Entertainment, is gearing up for a release on January 12, 2024. Ahead of it, the trailer was launched today at AMB Cinemas, Hyderabad, in the presence of the cast, crew, media and film buffs. With cinematography by Sivendra Dasaradhi, the film has three composers: Anudeep Dev, Krishna Saurabh and Hari Gowra.
The project took shape when the producer approached Prasanth Varma to direct a film for his banner after watching Zombie Reddy, giving him complete freedom in terms of the script. The latter’s long-time ambition was to make a superhero film and create a cinematic universe, much like Lokesh Kanakaraj’s LCU (Vikram, Leo, Kaithi).

With a blend of romance, emotion, action, devotion, humour and an element of adventure, HanuMan essentially has the structure and aesthetic of a superhero saga. The backdrop is set against a fictitious small town, Anjanadri, guarded by the influence of Hanuman. The tale revolves around an adventurous youngster who receives help from the almighty to save his town from evil forces.
The director wanted to tell the story through the lens of an underdog who’s placed in extraordinary circumstances and eventually finds his true purpose. When the protagonist lands in trouble, a supernatural force comes to his rescue. With superhero and mythological elements, HanuMan is expected to have the entertainment value of a folklore film that appeals to kids and adults alike.
While the initial aim was to make a small-budget film, HanuMan’s scale grew with time. The game-changing decision for the team was to push the bar in terms of VFX post-the teaser launch, which ensured that a new partner came on board. The producer put his entire savings into the project and consistently backed Prasanth’s vision.
The filming was completed in over 100 days in two years (started in 2021), while the makers spent nearly a year on post-production. With the pre-release formalities nearing completion, the team plans to promote HanuMan more as a Telugu film before opening it to other markets. The film will be released in 10 languages, including Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, and Korean (beyond Indian languages: Tamil, Kannada, Hindi, Malayalam and others).
