About Haq

Haq (2025) is a Hindi courtroom drama starring Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi, inspired by India's landmark Shah Bano case.

The film focuses on a woman's fight for support and rights after her husband divorces her via triple talaq, exploring faith, patriarchal norms, and justice through a powerful legal battle for dignity.

Set in 1980s India, the story follows Shazia Bano (Gautam) as she takes her husband, Abbas Khan (Hashmi), to court for abandoning her and their children after the second marriage. The legal battle becomes a larger cultural clash, with Abbas, a prominent lawyer, fighting against his wife, who passionately defends her rights based on religious texts and secular law. (Section 125 CrPC).

This film explores gender equality, minority rights, judicial interpretation, and the conflict between tradition (personal law) and constitutional principles. What started as a personal dispute turned out to be a landmark legal case, sparking a national debate on women's rights, Muslim personal law, and secular justice in India. Shazia's journey transformed her from a victim to a symbol of resistance against patriarchal norms, culminating in a Supreme Court ruling that changed the legal landscape of India.

Haq highlights the tension between personal faith, social customs, and constitutional law, questioning who defines justice and how it is delivered when personal law conflicts with secular legal principles. This film criticizes deeply rooted patriarchal ideas in society and religious interpretations that harm women.
