Hebbuli Cut is now on OTT

Who would have thought that the simple act of walking into the neighbourhood barbershop and getting the latest trending hairdo would be an unattainable dream for some, even if they had the means to afford it, only because of their social standing? Well, that is the premise of debutant filmmaker Bheemrao’s Hebbuli Cut , which masquerades as a teenage love story at first, only to then strip those layers and present a hard-hitting social commentary on caste oppression. The film, which received positive reviews during its theatrical run is now on OTT. It dropped on August 9 and can be streamed on Sun NXT (via OTTplay Premium too).

Hebbuli Cut is about more than just a fancy hair cut

Hebbuli Cut follows a teenager Vinaya aka Vinya (Mounesh Nataranga), who fancies his classmate, Rekha (Ananya), the local big-shot Basavan Gowda’s (Vinay) sister. Rekha is a Kiccha Sudeep fan, or so Vinya assumes, after finding a picture of the Kannada superstar from the film Hebbuli in her book. Egged on by a friend Rafique (Punith Shetty), to get the hairdo Sudeep sports in the film to get Rekha’s attention, Vinya approaches the local salon owner, Channa (Mahantesh) with his request.

Channa fends him off quoting Rs 200 for the job, a sum that he thinks will be way too much for Vinya to put together. The youngster, though, finds a way to earn enough, while also growing out his hair for Channa to do his magic. Vinya then gets a reality check when on the designated day, he is shown his place in society. Bheemrao’s film is a straight-forward narrative of caste-based oppression that is still prevalent in many parts of Karnataka. There’s no judgement as he puts the spotlight on this social evil.
