What's the plot of Jazz City?

Jazz City is a 10-episode historical thriller web series on Sony LIV, set to release on March 6, 2026. Created by Soumik Sen, the series is a political drama set against the backdrop of the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War and the turbulent geopolitical landscape of that era.

Jazz City takes place in Calcutta during the height of the Bangladesh Liberation War. The story follows an impostor who tries to hide his past, who becomes entangled in a dangerous web of power struggles, international espionage, and political and revolutionary activity.

The story features a smoky jazz club extensively, serving as a secret, vibrant hub for artists, spies, and revolutionaries amidst the surrounding conflict. This narrative aims to explore the interrelationship between music, revolution, and difficult moral choices at a pivotal moment in history.

Jazz City cast

In Jazz City, Arifin Shuvoo plays the lead role, portraying a character with multiple, changing looks and a "layered" personality, delivering dialogues in Bangla, Hindi, Urdu, and English. Souraseni Maitra stars opposite Shuvoo.

Apart from them, the series also features Shataf Figar, Santanu Ghatak, Amit Saha, Alexandra Taylor, Sreya Bhattacharyya, Sayandeep Sen, Tanika Basu, and Aniruddha Gupta in key roles.

Meanwhile, the jazz club served as a "sound of rebellion" against the brutal realities of the 1971 war. The series highlights the socio-political situation of 1971, connecting the birth of a nation to the personal, often immoral, choices of its characters. While focusing on 1971, the teaser hints at a wider scope covering 60 years of Indian subcontinental history, including references to 26/11 and the Pulwama attack.
