Kalamkaval ending explained: What happens in the climax of Mammootty and Vinayakan's slow-burn thriller, revolving around a serial killer? Did CI Jayakrishnan kill Stanley Das?

The Malayalam film Kalamkaval made an early OTT debut on SonyLiv via OTTplay Premium. Set in largely innocuous settings of rural villages and small towns and dingy lodges, Kalamkaval unravels a tale of sinister serial killings, without overly relying on filmy elements or dramatic storytelling. There are not many main characters in the thriller movie either, which revolves around the determined cop CI Jayakrishnan (Vinayakan) and the ruthless serial killer Stanley Das (Mammootty). So does the cop Jayakrishan kill Stanley Das in the Kalamkaval climax? Let’s break down the Kalamkaval ending and answer the several questions viewers may have. (Spoilers ahead, you have been warned).

Kalamkaval ends with Jayakrishnan confronting Stanley Das at a lodge reception, where the killer has come with his latest victim (Gayathri Arun). After making some casual conversations, Stanley Das takes his leave and walks up the stairs, when he hears his favourite song ‘Nila kayal..’ being played. The killer realises that his cover has been blown and returns to face the cop, who takes him down after a hand-to-hand combat at the lodge reception.
After overpowering the killer, Jayakrishnan puts an unconscious and bleeding Stanley Das in the car boot and drives away. But during the post-credits scene, it is shown that attempts are being made to break open the car's boot from inside. It is not revealed what happened to Stanley Das or whether he gets killed, but this hints that he is alive and seeking to make yet another daring escape.
In an interesting twist at the interval block, it is revealed that the killer Stanley Das was a cop himself and seeks to be part of CI Jayakrishnan’s team. This is a cunning move, as Stanley gets to know the attempts to corner him and makes his escape. But CI Jayakrishnan finds a bus conductor, who identifies Stanley Das as the person who had accompanied one of the victim girls.
Actress Rajisha Vijayan plays Divya, a young woman who also falls for Stanley Das’ romantic advances. Cop Jayakrishnan questions Divya, who is now married to another person. He also shows Divya the sketch of Stanley Das and she confirms that he indeed is the killer.
Stanley convinced all his victims to take a tablet to prevent the chances of getting pregnant. This turned out to be cyanide pills that instantly killed the women. He tells the same to Divya, but the young girl does not take it as she had some cash with her and was confident of leading a secure life with Stanley. When she comes out of the washroom, Stanley has already left. As he remains unaware that Divya is alive, she becomes the only woman to escape death.
Viewers are shown the wanted poster put up by the police, seeking information about the killer but it did not feature Stanley Das. However, in the end, it was revealed that the poster had Stanley Das itself and the earlier scene was probably just a red herring placed to mislead the viewers.
The person, who was shown as the caretaker of the hotel reception, approaches Stanley Das and seeks help to find his missing daughter. Stanley is visibly perturbed that the caretaker has identified him as a cop and more startled when he realises that the missing girl was one of his earliest victims. During the combat that follows in the lodge reception, this caretaker too attacks Stanley Das as he begins to overpower the cop. It is later revealed that the caretaker is also a cop as he salutes the CI before taking his leave.
Jithik K Jose helmed Kalamkaval, which takes inspiration from the real-life story of criminal Cyanide Mohan. The makers have said that the 2025 film is not based on any one person. But the real-life criminal Mohan Kumar targeted women in Karnataka, marrying them and killing them off by giving cyanide pills. The criminal also robbed them of their jewellery. These elements of targeting vulnerable women and killing them with cyanide are portrayed in Kalamkaval as well. But adding a cinematic twist in the Malayalam film, the makers characterised Stanley Das as a police officer, who also comes on board the investigation to find him!
Stanley Das committed the murder of around 30 women as he himself tells the cops. The cops had only 13 known cases of missing and murdered women. But Stanley Das, when he rides along with the CI and assistant insists that the number would have touched 30 by now, that even the cops find it hard to believe.
Kalamkaval is streaming on SonyLiv via OTTplay Premium after making an early OTT release. The Malayalam film is also available to stream in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu on the platforms with English subtitles.
