Kantara Chapter 1 Day 13 box office: Can Kantara Chapter 1 equal or better KGF: Chapter 2's Week 2 collection record?

Kantara Chapter 1 has been in theatres for nearly two weeks, and while collections have been dropping steadily, the film has created several records along the way, including as the second highest grossing movie of the year and industry hit status in Sandalwood, among others. The film’s 13thday at the box office, saw it hold steady with respect to Day 12. This was because there was an uptick in the Hindi collections, even as other languages showed further drops. Eventually, the film managed Rs 14 cr (net) at the all-India box office.

As Kantara Chapter 1 inches closer to the two week mark, collections are likely to drop further, as has been the trend even with big grossers like Baahubali 2 and KGF: Chapter 2. While Baahubali recorded net gains of Rs 30 cr on Day 13, for KGF-2 it was Rs 14.9 cr. KGF-2 had managed a week 2 net of Rs 159 cr (calculated till third Thursday). With two days to go, Kantara Chapter 1 is at Rs Rs 128 cr for Week 2.

On its third weekend, KGF-2 showed a minor uptick, but thereafter collections dropped significantly to single digit figures, which would improve only over weekends. The film had a 10-week theatrical run, with the last couple registering negligible revenues.

Kantara Chapter 1’s theatrical run is expected to dwindle sooner, given the film’s 4-week OTT window. The post theatrical streaming rights had been picked by Amazon Prime Video while the film was being shot, reportedly for a whopping Rs 125 cr, and the streamer will look at striking while the iron’s still hot.

Conservative estimates put Kantara Chapter 1’s lifetime gross in the range of Rs 750 cr to Rs 825 cr. Should it get to the higher figure, it will become the highest grosser of the year, pushing Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava to second spot. It may not be easy, though, given that a slew of Deepavali releases hit theatres in the coming days, including Dhruv Vikram’s Bison, Pradeep Ranganathan’s Dude, KGF’s Srinidhi Shetty’s Telusu Kada, and then, the next instalment in the Stree Universe, Thamma. Given the popularity of the Stree franchise, Thamma is expected to eat into Kantara’s Hindi belt collections.
