Kantara Chapter 1 week 1 world wide box office: Despite a good box office opening, making it the second highest grossing film from Kannada, Kantara Chapter 1 fails to break KGF: Chapter 2’s record

Rishab Shetty’s Kantara prequel, Kantara Chapter 1 has, no doubt, had a phenomenal 1st week at the box office. The film, which released officially on October 2, 2025, had, by its second Thursday, broken into the Rs 500 cr club, with the makers officially announcing that the week 1 worldwide gross of Kantara Chapter 1 was Rs 509 cr. As of Day 8, the film’s domestic gross stood at Rs 403 cr, with the overseas market contributing a little over Rs 100 cr only so far.

After the big opening that Kantara Chapter 1 had, especially on home ground, which was better than KGF: Chapter 2’s performance in the state, the question was if Rishab’s film could outdo the Yash starrer in the Week 1 stakes. Turns out, KGF: Chapter 2 remains the undisputed champion in the Week 1 collection report. The Prashant Neel directorial had raked in a whopping Rs 719 cr worldwide, while its domestic gross stood at Rs 609 cr.

However, where Kantara Chapter 1 has the upper hand is in its domestic revenue in Karnataka, from the Kannada original version. At the end of Week 1, Rishab’s film had a Rs 107 cr net collection in the Kannada version, whereas KGF-2 had a little over Rs 85 cr only. The bulk of the Yash film’s collections came from the Hindi belt, which contributed Rs 270 cr in Week 1.
Baahubali 2, with a 4-language release (Telugu, Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam), is said to have made in the vicinity of Rs 800 cr worldwide in 7 days. Its week 1 net collection stood at Rs 539 cr, against KGF-2 Rs 523.75 cr with a 5-language release.
The next big question is if Kantara Chapter 1 will make it to the Rs 1,000 crore club. Industry experts think it is a long shot now, possible only if the film has a great run until Deepavali, when big movies from other industries release. It will need at least 2 more big weekends, but is that possible?
