Debutant filmmaker Dhiraj MV’s Kapata Nataka Sutradhari, a Kannada political satire in which he played the lead as well, hit theatres in early July, at a time when audiences were still shunning theatres. The film, which dealt with a gutsy subject, received fairly positive reviews, which has ensured that it got a streaming deal as well. Kapata Nataka Sutradhari is set to come on OTT shortly.

Kapata Nataka Sutradhari headed to Sun NXT

Kapata Nataka Sutradhari has been picked up by Sun Network and will be available on Sun NXT on August 22, 2025. The film, which also stars Abhirama Arjuna and Uday Achar, Greeshma Sridhar, Varun Gururaj, Sri Sagar, Murali Shankar, Nisarg Varun, among others, is about the fallout of a Muslim man getting stuck under a statue in a temple. Prior to the release, Dhiraj had insisted that the film does not follow a Hindu-Muslim conflict and is instead a social and political commentary on how everyone reacts to this situation.

Dhiraj was Mohammed Ismail, the Muslim character who gets stuck under a statue in a historical Hindu temple, where it is believed that crawling under it will fulfil wishes. But then, Mohammed Ismail is overweight and promptly gets stuck under the statue. “What happens next is how society reacts to this predicament. From the police officials, to the temple authorities, politicians, media and social media influencers, each of them, rather than simplifying and solving the issue, does something for their own selfish needs,” Dhiraj had said.

To play the character, Dhiraj put on a whopping 45 kilos, because he could not convince any other actor to commit to such a body transformation. Also wearing a body suit was ruled out, as there was a lot of pushing and pulling involved once the character gets stuck under the statue and it would have been evident.
