Lokah Chapter 1 maker Dominic Arun reveals timeline for the next film in franchise

Lokah Chapter 2 will explore Tovino Thomas’ Chathan, Michael, and at least some of his 389 siblings, as hinted in the first film. But when can one expect it?

Ever since Lokah Chapter 1 Chandra writer and director Dominic Arun revealed that he’s planned a 5-film franchise, the first of which, starring Kalyani Priyadarshan in the lead, released for Onam 2025, everyone’s anxiously waiting for word on when to expect the next part. Although the end of Lokah Chapter 1, was a lead-in to the next film, with Tovino Thomas in the lead, there was speculation that the order could be moved around after all.

However, Dominic has clarified that the next instalment will be Lokah Chapter 2 with Tovino, who has now been revealed to be Michael, whose clinic it is that Chandra takes Sunny (Naslen) and friends to. When will the filmmaker take Lokah Chapter 2 Michael on floors, though? “We have an idea of what the story is going to be and how the entire thing is going to end, but we are yet to start writing the screenplay of the next film. It will take us at least a year,” he said in a recent interview with The Federal.

Going by this timeline and that Chapter 1 was shot in less than 100 days, the first half of 2027 would be a good time to expect the next film. As part of developing the world of Lokah, Dominic says that he has been researching folklore from across the globe and it struck him that there are a lot of similarities, like for instance Kuttichathan and Loki, although the latter was not inspiration for the filmmaker’s version.

As for the question of whether Mammootty as Moothon will be the big finale of the franchise, Dominic said that it’s not yet decided when his character will be officially unveiled. “As the screenplay progresses, he could be in the third or fourth film,” he said, adding that what is most definite is that Kalyani’s Chandra/Neeli will be an integral part of all the films in the franchise.
