It was truly a moment of pride for Indian cinema as Malayalam film Bramayugam, starring the legendary Mammootty, was screened at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, becoming the first movie from the country to achieve the feat. This is a tall achievement, especially coming from Malayalam cinema, situated in the small state of Kerala, that is known for making realistic films with modest budgets. The videos from the prestigious Oscar event have made it to social media, where netizens are celebrating both the iconic film crafted by director Rahul Sadasivan and the veteran star.

When Mammootty’s Bramayugam made history

The 2024 Malayalam film, starring Mammootty in a gray-shaded role, is helmed by young filmmaker Rahul Sadasivan. The period folklore-horror film was screened in the special film series, Where the Forest Meets the Sea, of the Academy Museum on February 12, 2026, in Los Angeles. Netizens have been sharing videos of the presenter reading out the Bramayugam description where Mammootty was addressed Mollywood legend, even as the crowd cheered.

“Historical moment”, “proud moment”, and “Mammootty making us proud” are some of the comments on Twitter.

Bramayugam joined classics from other parts of the world such as Florence Pugh’s Midsommar, Edward Woodward-starrer The Wicker Man, and Anya Taylor-Joy’s The Witch, among others.

What sets Bramayugam apart from other films

Bramayugam is also a period folk horror film, which was shot in black and white. The film narrates the tale of folk singer Thevan, who seeks refuge at an old mansion after escaping slavery and a probable death at the hands of a yakshi (vampire-like creature). Thevan, who is from a lower caste, is left grateful when the patriarch Kodumon Potty gives him shelter and food to eat. But he slowly realises that he has been trapped and that he has had to forgo his freedom for safety. It is also revealed that Kodumon Potty is, in fact, a chattan, a powerful sorcerer.

Malayalam actors Arjun Ashokan and Sidharth Bharathan play the other two key roles of Thevan and the cook, respectively.

Though the film is rooted in classic Kerala folklore with chathan, yakshi and other mythical creatures, Bramayugam narrates a tale of oppression and explores themes of master-slavery with a horror backdrop. Shehnad Jalal's cinematography and Christo Xavier's music also elevated the cinematic experience.
