When Minister Saji Cherian announced the 55th Kerala State Film Awards on Monday, Mammootty set the record for the most number of State Film Awards for Best Actor in Malayalam with seven wins. Mammootty was locked in a tie with Mohanlal, the other big M from Malayalam, who has also won the Kerala State Award for Best Actor six times. Mammootty, who has also won three National Awards, secured the record-breaking seventh award for his performance in Bramayugam a period folk horror thriller film.

Mammootty highest number of Kerala State Awards for Best Actor

One of the towering figures of Malayalam cinema apart from Mohanlal, Mammootty began his journey with Vilkkanundu Swapnangal in 1980 but the first award came to him four years later in 1984 for Adiyozhukkukal, helmed by IV Sasi. The second state award came to him in 1989 for three distinct yet stellar performances in MT Vasudevan Nair-scripted Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha, Mrugaya and Mahayanam.

It was another set of terrific performances in films such as the vile Vidheyan, the meek Ponthan Mada and the endearing Vatsalyam that fetched Mammootty his third Best Actor Award in 1993.

Then he had to wait for more than a decade to get his next state award for the poignant Kazhcha, where he plays an ordinary Malayali man who gives shelter to a Gujarati boy in his home.

The mystery film Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathirakolapathakathinte Katha saw Mammootty in triple roles, including the ruthless feudal lord Murikkinkunnath Ahmed Haaji. Mammootty bagged his fifth state award with this film in 2009.

Then an entire decade went by when Mammootty failed to win any state laurels for his performances, though he did have hits at the box office. But he ended his state award drought when he won the Best Actor award in 2022 for Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam, helmed by Lijo Jose Pellissery. Also equalling Mohanlal’s records of six Best Actor wins.

Mammootty and His Many Shades

And within just two years, Mammootty yet again fetched the Best Actor Award for Bramayugam, surpassing Mohanlal, who was recently conferred with the highest honour in Indian cinema, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
