The historical fiction is Mani Ratnam's most ambitious project. It is to be noted that many people from the film industry, including MGR and Kamal Haasan had tried to make the film, but in vain. Kamal Haasan had worked on the first draft of the film, when Mani Ratnam attempted to make the adaptation in the '80s. He said during the audio launch that it was not easy to make a film like this. "I am Mani Ratnam was petrified but at the same time, he had the conviction that he would indeed make the film. It requires a lot of guts."
