Mankatha, the 2011 Ajith-starrer Tamil film is having a re-release success, with the film hitting theatres once again. Written and directed by filmmaker Venkat Prabhu, Mankatha went on to become one of the iconic films in Ajith’s career and was a commercial blockbuster in 2011. With the re-release, the film is once again the talk of the town, with Mankatha getting major screens.

Mankatha re-release: How much should Ajith film make to break Ghilli record?

So far for Tamil cinema, Vijay-starrer Ghilli holds the highest grossing box office collection for a re-release. The film had re-released in theatres in 2024, and had massive response. As per Sacnilk records, Ghilli box office has neared Rs 26 crore in its total run. To beat this, Mankatha must earn more than this to become the highest grossing re-release film in Tamil. So far, Ghilli is followed up by Rajinikanth's Padayappa re-release which hit theatres last month and had made about Rs 19 crore.

It is to be noted that Mankatha already broke the day one collection record of Ghilli, by making a little more than Rs 4 crore. With Pongal releases frizzling out, Mankatha has become the top choice for moviegoers, especially with a lot of youngsters watching it for the first time in theatres.

A heist action drama, Mankatha is a story of a suspended cop Vinayak Mahadev who gangs up with four youngsters to loot cricket betting money. However, deceit and betrayal play a major role, unveiling the shades of each character to the forefront. The film’s last-minute twist, Ajith’s negative shade, and songs served as highlights for Mankatha.
