Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty was conferred with the country's third-highest civilian award, the Padma Bhushan on Monday, 22nd April 2024. He was given the award by President Droupadi Murmu.

The senior actor received the award in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Home Minister Amit Shahr, among others at Rashtrapati Bhavan in Delhi.

Speaking about receiving the prestigious awards, Mithun Chakraborty, who is known for his iconic performances, expressed his gratitude. While speaking to ANI, the actor said, "I am very happy. I have never asked for anything for myself from anyone in my life. I am very happy because when someone receives so much respect and honour... it's the happiest moment."

For the uninitiated, Mithun entered the world of acting in the year 1976, with the film Mirgayaa. He has been entertaining the audiences since then and is fondly known as 'Mithun Da' among his fans.

Speaking about the moment when the veteran actor received the awards, he said, "When I received the call informing me that I was being awarded the Padma Bhushan, I was silent for a minute because I hadn't expected it... because it's a big thing. But I didn't expect it. I am happy. Thank you to everyone on the committee who selected me."

Before receiving the Padma Award, the actor secured the first National Award for the portrayal of a Santhal rebel. He later won two more National Film Awards for the films Katha and Swami Vivekananda, respectively. The actor, who is known for his superhit songs like 'I Am A Disco Dancer' and 'Jimmy Jimmy' still has a good fan following and is a hit among the people.

Apart from Mithun Da, singer Usha Uthup also received the award in the field of Arts. Others who received the prestigious award are Bangladeshi singer Rezwana Choudhury Bannya, Bhajan singer Kaluram Bamaniya, and Gopinath Swain. Bharatnatyam dancer Dr Padma Subrahmanyam was also honored with the Padma Vibhushan.
