Mohanlal deleted scene from Manju Warrier’s Summer in Bethlehem out! 'Brilliant choice to cut it'

Summer in Bethlehem: The makers have released a deleted clip from the film, starring Manju Warrier, Suresh Gopi and Jayaram. Mohanlal makes a cameo appearance in the climax.

Malayalam Superstar Mohanlal appeared only in a cameo in the popular 90s movie Summer in Bethlehem and still made an impression. The film, which starred actors Manju Warrier, Jayaram and Suresh Gopi in a love triangle tale, continues to be popular for its songs and fun narrative. The makers of the Sibi Malayil directorial have released a deleted clip from the movie, and the fans have said that it was a brilliant decision not to include the dramatic portions in the film.

What is the deleted scene from Summer in Bethlehem

The Malayalam film Summer in Bethlehem released in 1998 and was an instant hit. Jayaram appears as struggling youth Ravi who lives with the wealthy yet orphan Dennis (Suresh Gopi) at his farm. When Ravi’s cousin Aami (Manju Warrier) and the rest of the relatives come visiting, Dennis falls for her. But Aami tells him that she is in love with Niranjan (Mohanlal), who is awaiting the gallows. They both meet Niranjan in jail, who urges Aami to live with Dennis and she lets him tie the knot!

In the now-released deleted scene, both Dennis and Aami return to his house and he informs everyone that she is in love with Niranjan. Overly dramatic dialogue follows as Dennis declares that he is ready to untie the mangalsutra and Aami will be her old self again. Jayaram and the rest of the family members too chip in, reminding them about the sanctity of marriage and mangalstura. Aami too has a vision of Niranjan urging her to live happily with Dennis and he would cherish their union.

However, these dialogues sound jarring in today’s times and the viewers have pointed out that if this portion was included, the movie would have flopped. Netizens also praised the editor L Bhoominathan for taking the call to cut out the dramatic portions, that would have weighed down the film.

The deleted clip is nearly 10 minutes long, and it is only Mohanlal’s short portion that seems ‘bearable’ as per netizens. The superstar was able to pull off the dialogue with a certain elan, being The Complete Actor he is!

Summer in Bethlehem was written by Ranjith, a noted scriptwriter-director who later transitioned into acting roles. Late actor Kalabhavan Mani also appeared in a fun role as Monayi in the movie, which featured an ensemble cast. The film was rereleased theatres in December 2025.

On the other hand, Mohanlal's upcoming movies include Drishyam 3 on April 2, and Patriot with Mammootty on April 23.
