Malayalam actor Mohanlal has become only the second Keralite to be conferred with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, a news that came as a surprise but has sparked much excitement among cinephiles. The Malayalam actor recently shared that it was unexpected and how he reacted when the Prime Minister’s Office called to convey the news.

Mohanlal, who has been conferred with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, expressed gratitude for the honour and thanked everyone, including the audiences, his co-actors over the years, the media and the Almighty. Mohanlal met the press in Kochi on Sunday after the announcement was made by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Saturday evening. While speaking to the media, Mohanlal recounted the moment and said that he felt it was surreal. The procedure is that the Prime Minister’s Office will first call the recipient before making the official announcement.

“When the Prime Minister's Office called, I could not believe it and asked them to repeat. I could never have imagined such an honour,” recalled Mohanlal, who has been ruling the industry for more than four decades

"I thank Malayalam cinema for making me who I am. It is a very prestigious award," said the actor who has won the National Award five times, adding that several renowned personalities have won the award before him, and he is honoured to join the elite list.

Remarking that this was his state of mind even when he received the previous National Awards, Mohanlal said that even when he was called during those instances, he had asked the caller to repeat - Just to be sure! The Complete Actor of Malayalam also fondly recalled the co-actors, several of whom are no more, saying that the achievement is due to the efforts of everyone he has collaborated with.

Mohanlal, who arrived in Kochi on Sunday morning, said that he visited his ailing mother after the announcement was made. He said that he is fortunate his mother is able to share the joyous moment with him. Mohanlal will be heading to Delhi on September 23, when he will be conferred with the award at the 71st National Film Awards.

After his interaction with the media, he also cut a cake with friends and colleagues by his side, including Antony Perumbavoor, a long-time associate of the iconic star.

Malayalam megastar Mammootty and other stars joined the fans in celebrating the prestigious award for Mohanlal. Before Mohanlal, ace filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan became the first Malayali to be conferred with the highest Honour in Indian cinema.
