No Jana Nayagan release in sight, but Vijay’s blockbuster Ghilli to hit theatres again

Even as uncertainty looms over the Jana Nayagan movie's release, Tamil actor Vijay’s 2004 blockbuster film Ghilli will re-release in theatres again on February 20, 2026.

Tamil star Vijay’s much-awaited film Jana Nayagan continues to be in limbo, though the makers had withdrawn the case against the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). But in some good news for Thalapathy Vijay fans, another film of the star is re-releasing this week in cinemas. Vijay’s blockbuster film Ghilli will hit theatres again on February 20, 2026.

When is Vijay’s Ghilli re-releasing

Ghilli is a Tamil sports action film, starring Vijay along with actress Trisha, which first released in theatres in 2004 and was a runaway hit. Director Dharani had written and helmed the film, which will re-release on February 20 (Friday). But this is not the first time Ghilli is re-releasing. The Vijay film was remastered and re-released in April 2024, and once again stormed the box office. Ghilli even became the highest-grossing film before the Hindi period folk horror film Tumbbad surpassed its earnings later the same year.

What’s Ghilli movie about

The plot of Ghilli revolves around the young Kabaddi player Velu, who passionately follows his sport even when his father chides him for not focusing on education. The plot thickens when Velu is sent to Madurai to attend a function, but the youth instead opts to play kabaddi. In Madurai, he comes across Dhanalakshmi being harassed by gangster Muthupandi who wants to marry her. He rescues her from his goons and takes the young girl to his home in Chennai but trouble follows them.

If you want to watch Ghilli on OTT, the Vijay film is streaming on Sun NXT via OTTplay Premium. Ghilli is a remake of the Telugu film Okkadu which is also available for streaming on both platforms. Okkadu stars Mahesh Babu and Bhumika Chawla along with senior actor Prakash Raj. Notably, both Mahesh Babu and Prakash Raju are part of SS Rajamouli’s upcoming film Varanasi.

On the other hand, Vijay’s Jana Nayagan was scheduled for a Pongal release on January 9, 2026. But the film is yet to receive a censor certificate and there is no official update on when Vijay’s final film will be released. The H Vinoth directorial also features Mamitha Baiju, Pooja Hegde and Bollywood actor Bobby Deol.
