And it's official. Ajith's Thunivu will hit the screens around Pongal festival in January 2023. Producer Boney Kapoor has officially announced the news amid speculation of the movie clashing with Vijay's Varisu doing the rounds. As the clash is inevitable, all eyes are now on the release date of both the movies.

Varisu was announced as a Pongal release long ago, and Thunivu was initially slated as a Deepavali release this year. However, the shooting of the latter wasn't completed, and hence, makers had to let go of their initial plan.

There are rumours of both the films releasing on the same day, and then there are a few sources claiming that Varisu will arrive a day in advance, most probably on January 11. It looks like both the teams are waiting for makers of other projects to announce their release date.

The last time films of Ajith and Vijay clashed at the box office was in 2014; the former's Veeram and latter's Jilla hit the screens on January 10. The two movies ended up collecting more or less the same figures after its theatrical run. Tamil movie lovers are eager to know how the clash would turn out to be this time.

The year 2022 was special for exhibitors in Tamil Nadu, thanks to the monstrous performance of Vikram and Ponniyin Selvan 1 at the box office. The two films which were released in a span of three months grossed around 400 crores only from the state.

It looks like 2023 will begin with a bang as two of the biggest mass heroes of Kollywood are set to compete with each other. Varisu is a family drama directed by Vamshi Paidipally, while Thunivu is a heist thriller helmed by H Vinoth. Udhayanidhi Stalin's Red Giant Movies has acquired theatrical rights of Thunivu, while Netflix has bagged its digital rights.
