Only Murders In The Building S5E4: Just when Charles, Mabel and Oliver think they’ve figured out who the finger in the shrimp cocktail belonged to, they realize they are barking up the wrong tree

Billionaire Jay Phlug (Logan Lerman) is missing a finger and he has a perfect explanation for it. After Arconia’s sleuthing trio found out the velvet room in the building where New York’s ‘new mob’, the city’s rich and powerful, play poker, they decide to flush out their ‘suspects’ out by dropping a teaser to a new season of their Only Murders In The Building podcast. And just like that, they have not one, but all three of the billionaires at Oliver’s doorstep.

After a not so veiled libel threat from the billionaire trio, Charles (Steve Martin), Mabel (Selena Gomez) and Oliver (Martin Short) decide to divide and conquer – each paired with one suspect to get to the truth of Jay’s missing finger and, possibly, Nicky’s (Bobby Cannavale) death too. What is there to investigate, wonders Sebastian (Bash) Steed (Christoph Waltz), playing off Nicky’s death as a mob hit, while poor old doorman Lester was someone they saw every Saturday, but never really paid attention to.
Each gets a story, which, incredibly, ties in neatly with the other versions - On the night Lester died, Nicky turned up at the velvet room, raving about the movie Good Fellas, brandishing a cleaver, with an inordinate amount of ‘white powder’ under his nose. Jay tried to stop him and in doing so, lost his finger. Case closed, says Camila (Renee Zellwegger), as the trio leaves, convinced that their names will stay out of the podcast. Charles, Mabel and Oliver don’t think that Jay, Bash or Camila are murderers – hell, Jay makes Mabel’s eyelashes flutter.
It is only when the Only Murders in the Building podcast gets invited to be on Wondify (the Spotify of podcasts) and the trio sign a 3-year contract, that they realize they’d been conned by Jay, Bash and Camila. The finger in Oliver’s fridge does not belong to Jay. But as per this contract, they are forbidden from podcasting about company management and it so turns out that Jay, Bash and Camilla became majority stakeholders of Wondify in a more recent development. What will the sleuths do now?
What’s happening to our sweet little murder building? Mabel’s exact words after running into the Arconia’s new robot doorman, LESTR – Logic Engineered Secure Tenant Robot – a tribute to the late Lester. LESTR wants biometric data of all the Arconia residents, presumably, because it is a plant by Bash.
