Parasakthi: Sudha Kongara on how Purananooru with Suriya became Sivakarthikeyan's film

Director Sudha Kongara reveals why Suriya exited Purananooru, later revived as Parasakthi with Sivakarthikeyan. The period drama, set in the 1960s, is gearing up for a January 10 release.

In two weeks, actor Sivakarthikeyan and director Sudha Kongara’s Parasakthi is set to release. The period drama which was supposed to release on January 14, has been advanced to January 10. Parasakthi was first announced as Purananooru with Suriya who was also to produce the film, but was later dropped with Sivakarthikeyan coming in. While the reasons for change have not been revealed, director Sudha Kongara recently opened up about it.

Sudha Kongara on Purananooru changing to Parasakthi:

Filmmaker Sudha Kongara’s Parasakthi is nearing release in two weeks. In a recent interview, the director recalled how she decided to do Purananooru with Suriya and it was during the Covid-19 lockdown when she called Suriya. While both of them decided to do the project, Sudha said that Suriya did not have enough dates while the film had to be shot continuously. It was at this time she was approached by a producer for a script for Sivakarthikeyan.

The director also mentioned that Sivakarthikeyan accepted the film even without hearing the script. Sudha Kongara further said that Parasakthi will be set in the 1960s but is a fictional tale with some true events in the mix. Widely believed to be on anti-Hindi agitations, Parasakthi is right now undergoing censor formalities.

Parasakthi is Sivakarthikeyan’s 25th film and the first time he will be working with Sudha Kongara. It also will feature actor Ravi Mohan as the antagonist, Atharvaa as Sivakarthikeyan’s brother, and Sreeleela as the female lead in her Tamil debut. GV Prakash is scoring music for the film and marks his 100th project. The post-theatrical streaming rights of Parasakthi is reportedly bagged by ZEE5.

The film was initially announced for January 14 release. However, it was later advanced to January 10, Saturday. It will be releasing one day after Vijay-starrer Jana Nayagan, and competing at the box office with other Pongal/Sankranthi releases.
