Elio is a lonely, imaginative middle-class student who dreams of aliens. He sends a recorded message into space using a military satellite, which is intercepted by aliens. He is abducted and sent to the Communiverse, a gathering of representatives from various alien civilisations.

He mistakenly believes himself to be the leader of the world, so he goes along with the lie to gain acceptance in the group. Elio must overcome dangerous misunderstandings, form bonds with strange aliens, and befriend the son of a warlord to prove his worth to Earth.
