When actor-producer Raj B Shetty and director-writer JP Thuminad decided to release a Malayalam dubbed version of their hit Kannada film Su From So, there was mild apprehension about whether or not the comedy and the cultural references would translate well. But now that the Malayalam version is in theatres in Kerala and audiences who have seen it have been raving about the quality of the dubbing, Raj says that a lot of effort went into ensuring that it doesn’t feel like a dubbed movie.

Raj B Shetty: Quality of dubbing was meant to give audiences value for money

The credit for this authenticity, he adds, goes to Sathish Muthukodu, who supervised the dubbing and ensured that Su From So was recreated in Malayalam. “It was not an easy process and we made a lot of corrections to get to the final output, simply because we did not want audiences to feel it is a dubbed movie. We had to ensure utmost quality because like Kannada audiences they too are paying money to watch the film and we had to give them their money’s worth,” said Raj in conversation with Skylark Entertainment, adding that he decided to dub for his character because it was designed as a guy with Mangaluru roots.

The Malayalam version of Su From So released in Kerala on August 1, 2025 and the response to it has been fantastic. Based on positive word-of-mouth demand has been on the upswing, with additional licenses issued to theatres to accommodate this.
