Amid online furore that a Kannada-dubbed release may not happen for Coolie, the trailer dropped on August 7, 5 days after the Tamil original.

Superstar Rajinikanth’s Coolie is, undoubtedly, the next big film that’s got audiences everywhere excited. The Lokesh Kanagaraj directorial is, reportedly, releasing in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi and Malayalam on August 14, 202. But when the trailer launch happened on August 2, there was no sign of a Kannada version, which had left a section of audiences agitated. Soon enough, there were debates on social media about the viability of Kannada content, with many arguing that the return on investment does not justify the effort of dubbing it into the language.

But then, late on August 7, a Kannada trailer was released, reaffirming the team’s dedication to have that version in theatres as well, considering that not one, but two Kannada stars are in the film – Real Star Upendra and Dimple Queen Rachita Ram. Coolie is expected to shatter several box office records, but the question is also if the Kannada dubbed version will set one in the state.

Rajinikanth’s Jailer attributed only Rs 5.7 cr as the revenue from the Kannada version, while the film amassed over Rs 50 cr in the state. The highest grossing Kannada-dubbed version film is Pushpa 2, which is said to have made Rs 9.3 cr. Can Coolie better this and notch up double digit figures?
According to the synopsis available from the film’s British film classification, Coolie follows a mysterious man who takes a stand against a corrupt syndicate exploiting and abusing the workers of a port town. The film’s trailer, though, has also hinted at the possibility of a sci-fi angle, with time travel mooted as a theory.

The film’s massive ensemble cast also includes Sathyaraj, Shruti Haasan, Soubin Shahir, Nagarjuna, Aamir Khan, Reba Monica John, among others. Music is by Anirudh, while cinematography is credited to Girish Gangadharan. Written by Lokesh, Coolie is said to be nearly 3 hours in run time, with a budget estimated at Rs 350 cr to Rs 400 cr.
