What's the plot of The Kerala Story?

The Kerala Story (2023) is a Hindi film that blends real-life events with dramatised storytelling. It explores allegations of radicalisation and recruitment of young women from Kerala by the Islamic State (ISIS), which sparked political controversy and received mixed critical response upon release.

The film centres on Shalini Unnikrishnan (later Fatima Ba), a Hindu nursing student in Kerala. Her college roommates, Nimah, Geetanjali, and Asifa, play pivotal roles. Asifa is connected to an extremist network that seeks to convert and indoctrinate non-Muslim women. Through Asifa and her male associates, Abdul and Rameez, Shalini and Geetanjali are gradually exposed to extremist ideology, ultimately being persuaded that Islam is the only true path.

Shalini's life takes a darker turn when Rameez pressures her to convert but later abandons her. She is subsequently married off to another man, Ishaq, and smuggled through Sri Lanka and Pakistan to Syria, where she is trained as a suicide bomber. The story is primarily told through flashbacks as Shalini recounts her experiences.

Surekha Nair (Ulka) from Kerala dreams of clearing the UPSC and becoming an IAS officer, Neha Sant (Aishwarya) from Madhya Pradesh aims to win a national gold in javelin, and Divya Paliwal (Aditi) from Rajasthan aspires to be a social media influencer with a passion for dance.

Their lives take an unexpected turn when they each fall in love with a Muslim boy, but these relationships gradually reveal a deeper agenda of religious conversion, which tests their faith, ambitions, and personal choices.
