Selvaraghavan on Aayirathil Oruvan and Pudhupettai sequels: I cannot decide to make them all by myself

Selvaraghavan, the director-turned-actor, will be seen playing the antagonist in the upcoming Tamil film Aaryan. While the crime thriller is due to release on October 31, one question that has been hounding Selvaraghavan is the sequel of Aayirathil Oruvan. 15 years since its release, Selvaraghavan is yet to make Aayirathil Oruvan 2. Speaking at a recent interview, the director spoke about the update and the impact of negative criticism it got at time of release.

It is a known fact that Aayirathil Oruvan, a cult classic now, was not much well-received at the time of release. The fantasy action-adventure film, starring Karthi, ended up becoming a box office failure, even as the film was hailed years later for its vision and making.

"I felt sad when lot of negative things were talked about Aayirathil Oruvan. That was the only time I was sad. They were talking personally, and negative comments on it. But now, people are celebrating it, and asking for a sequel. What use in understanding the film now," said Selvaraghavan in an interview with Galatta Plus.

The filmmaker went on to say that even as the film is being celebrated now, the time and efforts invested in the making of film then, had gone unnoticed and unsatisfied, leaving the work of those involved then, had not been valued.

Meanwhile, the filmmaker also spoke about the sequels of Aayirathil Oruvan and Pudhupettai. Selvaraghavan said, “I cannot decide part 2 suddenly all by myself. I think we should wait for lot of people," he added. Saying that he has ideas for both Aayirathi Oruvan 2 and Pudhupettai sequel, Selvaraghavan said, "Both Dhanush and Karthi are not available for next three years at least. But the script has to satisfy me. I am writing Aayirathil Oruvan 2 and Pudhupettai 2.”
