Even as fans are excitedly taking in the latest season of Sex Education which began streaming on Netflix starting September 17, they were in for some dampening news about one of its beloved stars. Emma Mackey, who plays troubled teen Maeve Wiley on the series recently hinted that she had thoughts about the end of her stint on the highly popular Netflix show.

In conversation with Hunger, the English-French actor revealed how she had begun to think about the fact that she could not continue playing a teenager ‘her whole life’. She calls it being bittersweet and complicated, as she made some lifelong friends among the show’s stellar cast and had genuine love and affection towards them. She also adds that it kind of seemed that they had all grown up together. The show's status as a pop culture icon owing to its tackling of a rarely talked about the concept is also not lost on Mackey.

The star had nothing but good things to say about her on-screen persona as well, calling it a gift to play the impactful Maeve and that she was only recently realising her character’s strength. Mackey’s critically acclaimed performance had landed her a BAFTA nomination as well.

The actor also let in on how she was interested in making a foray into filmmaking as well, talking about the allure of the process of writing and conceiving a story and watch it getting fleshed out.

Sex Education revolves around the story of a group of students of Moordale Secondary School, chronicling the awkward, exciting, troubled and touching moments of the tumultuous phase that is every teenager’s life. In addition to Emma Mackey the series also stars Asa Butterfield, Gillian Anderson, Ncuti Gatwa, Connor Swindells, Kedar Williams-Stirling, Aimee Lou Wood, Tanya Reynolds, and Patricia Allison.
