At the heard of it, Sirai is a police procedural film. It revolves around the escort duty that the cops are put into, making them responsible to submit the accused individuals to the court for their hearings. While this aspect of police department is less explored in Tamil cinema, Sirai takes this as the main crux to establish a journey of a cop who must submit a young man accused of murder, to the court. Sirai is free of any cinematic exaggeration and sticks true to its subject and details a procedural drama in an authentic way.

Sirai stars Vikram Prabhu as the cop who is in charge of escorting the accused, while debutant LK Akshay Kumar plays Abdul, the young man accused of murder. Along with them Anishma Anilkumar, and Ananda Thambirajah also play important roles in Sirai. The movie tucks in a love story amid the crime drama, giving ample space for the characters to perform. The cast’s subtle acting, devoid of heroism and over-the-top performances, make it one of the standout points of the film.
Sirai is a story of a young man Abdul who is accused of murder. While he is being escorted by the police to court, the movie shows how individuals from certain sections and communities are viewed differently, paying way for discrimination. Sirai is also a love story, that of a young woman who comes for Abdul’s every court hearing, hoping for a relief. With police procedural drama on one hand and romance on the other, Sirai is a gripping story with a powerful message.
Director Tamizh, who had made Taanakkaran (another brilliant cop film about police training), has written Sirai. While it is directed by debutant Suresh Rajakumari, Sirai is based on true events and is presented with exceptional writing. Tamizh, having served the police department earlier, brings in his experience, which makes Sirai a solid watch which stays true and grounded to its subject.
Sirai has all the ways to have a tragic ending. However, it does not, thus instilling some faith in humanity. While it is for you to watch and find out what happens at the end, Sirai ends on an optimistic note, spreading hope. It also goes against the grain by not showing a sad climax, which Tamil cinema often resorts to.
