Su from So: With close to 75,000 tickets sold on aggregators on Day 1, JP Thuminad’s debut directorial is set to become the highest grosser of the year so far.

A few days ago, no one knew about a film called Su from So or the team behind it, except, of course, actor-filmmaker Raj B Shetty, who’d produced it. The reception to the film’s song Danks Anthem and the trailer was good, but when it actually hit theatres, the outpouring of love has been phenomenal. Despite a clash with the big-ticket Telugu release Hari Hara Veera Mallu and close on the heels of films like Ekka and Junior, Su from So is taking the box office across Karnataka by storm.

According to official figures, between the premiere shows and the day 1 response, Su from So was inching close to 100,000 ticket sales, with three-quarters of it coming on its first Friday. Such has been the demand for the film across locations that Raj and the distributors have been scrambling to figure out how best to serve audiences. The film is doing phenomenally well across multiplexes and single-screen theatres, which has prompted them to allocate more shows.

In an Instagram live, Raj thanked audiences profusely and shared that given the demand, multiplexes and single-screen theatres in Bengaluru were adding early morning shows to accommodate the rush. “This is something we’ve seen happen only for movies with big stars and now, our film has managed it too,” said Raj. Starting July 27, Sunday, multiplexes across Bengaluru will have shows starting as early as 7 am, while single-screens will begin by 8 am.
According to industry trackers, Su From So will organically become the highest grossing Kannada film of the year so far, going by the traction of the first weekend. The film’s Malayalam dubbed version will release across Kerala on August 1, where it is expected to perform just as well. Dulquer Salmaan’s Wayfarer Films is distributing it in Kerala.

Raj and co, whose promotional strategy was to release the film with paid premieres and drum up word-of-mouth publicity, which worked out for them, will continue touring the state in the coming days, details of which he has been sharing on Instagram.
