Su From So: Why Raj B Shetty is not keen on a sequel to the hit comedy

Kannada actor-filmmaker Raj B Shetty has always been clear that he’s not a fan of remakes or sequels, especially of the kind of films he makes, as they are very rooted to a particular region and culture. He resisted the urge with Garuda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana, which was not even dubbed in another language, while Toby got a Malayalam theatrical release. His latest, Su From So, which Raj has served as producer, lyricist and actor, is the directorial debut of his long-term collaborator, JP Thuminad.

The comedy film is the highest grossing Kannada film of 2025 so far since its July 25 release, and is picking up in Kerala too, where it came out a week later with a Malayalam version. The film is now headed to AP/Telangana with a Telugu-dubbed version on August 8. Such is the craze around the film, which is set in a small village in Mangaluru and features a bunch of likeable and relatable characters that there have been queries about whether it will get a sequel.

Raj B Shetty: Creators should make something original and be done with it

As a producer, Raj is clear that he will not entertain the idea of a sequel. “There will not be a Part 2 from my banner. The reason being that we are creators and as creative people, we should make something original and then be done with it. That is what I believe. Otherwise it becomes about finding a formula and replicating it, which I don’t want to do from Lighter Buddha Films. So, even if it is the most successful project, I want to keep it aside and try something else,” he said at a recent press briefing.

Classic Kannada comedies on OTTplay

Having said that, though, Raj is open to the idea of writer-director JP Thuminad pursuing that path, as long as he is not associated with it. If another production house wants to do Su From So 2 and take all the necessary permissions, they can, he says. JP chimes in that he has no plans for a sequel at the moment, given that he took 6 years to fine-tune the script of the original.
