The newest Superman film, starring David Corenswet and directed by James Gunn, has gotten off to a fantastic start in India. Sacnilk has reported that the film's opening weekend earnings were Rs 25.5 crore. Starting with Rs. 7 crore on the first day, it continued to do well for the following two days. The film's increased attendance at night and during the evening in big cities helped it earn Rs 9 crore on Sunday.

Stream Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, Man of Steel, and Superman Returns now on JioHotstar via OTTplay Premium and witness the evolution of the iconic superhero.

Superman among the top in Hollywood box office rankings

The total occupancy rate for the English version of the film was 33.04% on Day 3, with night shows' performances reaching a peak of 44.69%. When it comes to opening weekends in India, Superman is right up there with the best Hollywood films. Coming in at number three in India for the year 2025, it follows in the footsteps of Jurassic World: Rebirth and Mission: Impossible—Final Reckoning.

The success of the film was further enhanced by its presentation in premium formats such as IMAX and 4DX. Collections were good, especially in multiplex chains, in major cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Delhi. Among recent Hollywood releases in India, Superman performed better than Brad Pitt's F1 Final Destination: Bloodlines, and Captain America: Brave New World.

New take on the iconic superhero

The film has David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Lois Lane played by Rachel Brosnahan, and Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult, in the lead roles. Among the supporting cast members are Milly Alcock, Isabela Merced, and Nathan Fillion. Unlike earlier iterations, Gunn's depiction of the character does not repeat the genesis tale. Instead, Gunn's portrayal follows a younger Superman as he confronts a new adversary, manoeuvres through a public relations dilemma, and grapples with his relationship with Lois Lane.

DC's Power-Packed Heroes

The film was subjected to multiple edits before its clearance for release in India by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Some of these changes included eliminating all instances of explicit language and shortening a 33-second kissing scene between the main characters. A more subdued two-second substitute shot was also included to replace an eight-second segment that featured a slang gesture. The film's suitability for Indian audiences was the driving force behind these revisions. However, netizens took to their social media pages and slammed CBFC left, right, and centre.

We anticipate Superman to maintain strong collections throughout the week due to positive word-of-mouth and ongoing excitement in the character.
