The Kerala High Court on Tuesday considered a plea filed against the upcoming film The Kerala Story 2, which has made claims of communal strife in the state. However, the Kerala High Court questioned the makers on how could they make such a portrayal when the state lives in harmony?
"Kerala lives in total harmony. But you have portrayed that this is happening all over Kerala. There is a wrong indication and can also incite passion,” Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas said, as per the report on Live Law.
While stating that he normally does not interfere in movies, the judge said, "You are saying that it is inspired by true events and name Kerala is given, which can create some communal tension."
The judge further said that he would watch the movie on February 25 and asked for a screening to be arranged.
Much like its predecessor, The Kerala Story, the 2026 sequel also tackles issues of forceful religious conversions and has expanded to bring the narratives from Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. The Kerala Story 2 specifically sparked a row after a teaser was released which showed a young woman being force-fed beef.
However, this triggered a huge backlash with Malayalis, especially flooding social media with memes. Celebrities such as filmmaker-actor Anurag Kashyap and actor Prakash Raj had also slammed the scenes portrayed in The Kerala Story 2 glimpse. The Kerala Story 2, starring Ulka Gupta, Aditi Bhatia and Aishwarya Ojha, is slated to release in theatres on February 27, 2026.
The film is produced by director-actor Vipul Amrutlal Shah.
