Ahead of the film’s release, there was immense pressure to ban it. Narayana Murthy struggled to find theatres, as no exhibitor was interested in releasing his low-budget drama. However, he fought against the odds and managed to release University in a limited number of theatres.

University is considered one of R. Narayana Murthy’s best films, as it addresses more contemporary issues and moves away from themes of suppression and the caste system, which are common in many of his films.
