The Karthi-starrer Vaa Vaathiyaar was slated for December release. However, due to financial and legal struggles, Vaa Vaathiyaar had released for Pongal this year on January 14. Vaa Vaathiyaar had opened to middling to subpar reviews upon its release, making one of the drawbacks for the film. It must also compete with two other films; Parasakthi starring Sivakarthikeyan and Jiiva’s rural comedy Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimayil.

Vaa Vaathiyaar is a comedy entertainer that follows a man raised by his grandfather, a devoted fan of the legendary MG Ramachandran, who instils in him an MGR-inspired worldview that shapes his life and ambitions. However, the man grows up to become a cop with questionable ethics only to begin impersonate MGR in a bizarre turn of events.
