Viruman box office: The Karthi-starrer exceeds expectations and is turning out to be a superhit

Karthi and Aditi in Viruman

It looks like the Kollywood box office, which was staring at a lull post the huge success of Vikram, is now on fire. Karthi-starrer Viruman, which was released in theatres on Friday, opened to mixed reports among critics, but movie buffs have been welcoming the film with open arms.

The Muthaiya directorial earned more than 8 crores at box office on its release day and emerged as Karthi's best opening. The family drama earned more or less the same figure on the second and third day as well. According to sources, the movie has garnered around 25 crores from Tamil Nadu and has collected more than 30 crores from across the world in the first three days.

Makers hope that the movie will do close to 8 crores today as well, thanks to the public holiday. Going by the current trend, the film might end up as Karthi's highest or second highest grosser. The real test begins for Viruman from Tuesday, though.

The performances of Karthi, Prakash Raj and Rajkiran among others are highlights of the film which was panned by critics for its predictable screenplay and lack of novelty. A couple of hit songs composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja were instrumental in bringing the much-needed hype for the film before its release.

Viruman, which is the second release for Karthi in the pandemic era, has Singam Puli, Vadivukkarasi, RK Suresh and Soori among others essaying key roles in it. Aditi Shankar, who made her acting debut with the rural drama, has been receiving appreciation for her screen presence.

VIruman might end up as the highest grosser for director Muthaiya as well. The actor-filmmaker duo's first outing, Komban which was released in 2015, too, was a box office success.
